Aloha! Over these past 6 months I have been receiving a lot of great feedback from you all regarding this site and the content it brings. I have enjoyed maintaining LocoKineGrindz.com over the past few years and bringing new food posts to the internet. Over the past few weeks I have worked on launching a new site, geared toward bringing more local Hawaii content. This new site, TheHawaiiLife.com, will serve as a place for me to share my experiences with not just local food, but with everything that our great state has to offer. Over the coming weeks I will be transitioning all new content...

Casual Grindz: Sweet Home Cafe

Monday, June 7, 2010

Whew! It has been a crazy couple of weeks since my last post. Busy days during the work week and weekends packed with cruising around the islands for some delicious grinds. Today’s casual grindz highlight is a spot that has become very, very popular over the past year. It is constantly on Yelp’s “hot list” for Honolulu and never fails to have a line of customers waiting at the door as soon as it opens. Sweet Home Cafe is a hot pot specialty restaurant featuring a variety of delicious broths. Patrons order plates of paper thin meats to cook in the broth. The inside...

Casual Grindz: Tanioka’s Seafood & Catering

Saturday, May 22, 2010

Last week was my grandfather’s 82nd birthday! To celebrate we had a casual dinner at my father’s house featuring some catering items from Tanioka’s Seafood & Catering. Yet another stop on our Food Hunt for Charity, Tanioka’s has a reputation for excellent poke, musubi, fish patties, and many other local-style grinds. Everything we ordered was excellent, particularly the spicy inari and the fish patties. So ono! For dinner we picked up the following: Fried Chicken – The skin was PERFECTLY crispy! Teriyaki Beef Char Siu Spicy Inari – filled with spicy tuna!...

Casual Grindz: Burgers on the Edge

Friday, May 14, 2010

Summer is coming up quick and one of my favorite summertime foods is the burger: A thick, juicy grilled beef patty on a nice soft bun with all the trimmings. And if I’m really lucky, I’ll find some awesome crunchy bacon to go along with it! This past weekend while driving around to hit spots on the Food Hunt for Charity, I decided to satisfy my burger craving by stopping by Burgers on the Edge. I have long heard about this burger joint from a friend but had never made the time to come down. My wife and I pulled up into a jam packed parking lot. After we negotiated the parking lot...

Casual Grindz: Taiyo Noodles

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

A late night dining staple for me and my friends during high school, Taiyo ramen was our dinner stop the other night for a fast meal. Yet another establishment on the Food Hunt for Charity list, Taiyo ramen serves up a variety of ramen and rice dishes. I’ve always enjoyed the rice dishes at Taiyo a little more than their noodles, especially the mabo tofu and kim chee fried rice. For noodles the cold noodle and miso tend to be my favorites. Here’s what we had for our quick dinner: Fried Gyoza Spicy kim chee that comes with any order Wonton Ramen in shoyu broth Spicy Mabo Tofu...
